B’DOS N’AL TRUST AWARDS IN ASSOC. WITH B’DOS INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS

The Barbados National Trust and Barbados Institute of Architects announce the mounting of an exhibition of entries for the Architectural Awards competition recently held in recognition of the Trust's 50th anniversary. These awards recognise the best work revitalising the buildings of the past (pre-WWII) as well as new work (since 1990) to be made note of for the future.

Both old and new buildings are separated into residential and non-residential giving 4 categories:

    Historic Restoration: Residential

    Historic Restoration: Non-Residential

    New Buildings: Residential

    New Buildings: Non-Residential

EBCCI, UWI, Cave Hill. Opening hours 12 noon to 8pm 10th, 11th, 12th

"The Trust was formed 50 years ago to promote and champion the preservation of buildings of historic and architectural value and places of natural beauty in Barbados. The huge challenges of preserving our many historic buildings in the face of rapid tropical decay and a global and local economic recession are being faced at the same time that UNESCO has inscribed Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison as a World Heritage site. This has brought the importance of our built heritage into dramatic focus.

The Trust is especially pleased to be able to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a wonderful partnership with the Barbados Institute of Architects, in arranging for Architectural Awards to both outstanding restoration projects and new designs. The scheme has been a great success, with a very high quality of 28 submissions from most leading architects in Barbados. Our panel of five judges, from the Trust and the BIA, had a very difficult task but were as meticulous as possible in choosing first and second place in each of the four categories, as well as a number of Highly Meritorious projects.

We believe that repetition of Awards on a regular basis will be a valuable way of recognising and encouraging both the revitalising of our many architectural treasures and ensuring the highest quality of design of new buildings, which will become the treasures of future generations.”
