KNIGHT OF SAINT ANDREW

For extraordinary and outstanding achievement and merit in service to Barbados and humanity at large.

Errol Ricardo “Mickey” Walrond

Errol Ricardo Walrond, known to the world as Mickey, was born in 1936 in Westbury New Road. His father Arthur volunteered for the RAF when young Mickey was 4 years old, to fight in the 2nd World War; he was killed 3 years later. Mickey attended the famous Wesley Hall primary school, cradle of so many great Barbadians, and then Harrison College on a parish scholarship, winning a Barbados in 1953. He proceeded to Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London.

At Guy’s he did well in the preclinical studies, was awarded the Anatomy prize and invited to do an extra year for a BSc in Anatomy.

Application for extension of his scholarship was belatedly denied by the Ministry of Education, so he spent the last year of medical school without funds, and to survive he worked as a waiter and in the post office in vacations – a familiar story, your Excellency, as I had the same experience a few years later, and worked as a security guard, armed with a cosh!

Professor Walrond interned at Guy’s Hospital, chose a career in surgery, and came home in ’65 to the new QEH, where he wrote his first medical paper, appearing in the famous journal the Lancet.

After a Commonwealth Fellowship with heart surgeon Lord Brock at Guy’s, he was invited back to UWI in Jamaica as lecturer in 1968.

There, he was one of the leaders initiating postgraduate surgery programmes in the medical faculty. His Jamaica sojourn ended in ’74 with a transfer to Barbados, to strengthen the University’s teaching programme at the QEH. He was promoted to Professor in 1977.

Mickey brought home, from Jamaica, a wonderful wife – attorney at law Beverley Walters. Now many aspiring Bajan scholars with political ambitions take unto themselves a Jamaican wife, so some of his friends foresaw a career in politics, but Mickey has rigorously eschewed the political platform, preferring the professorial podium, and passing the surgical baton, as it were, to his brilliant son Maurice.

He served as Vice Dean and then Dean of the medical faculty from ’77 to ’92 and again from ’96 until he retired 10 years ago.

He fostered the evolution of undergraduate teaching, continuing medical education and local postgraduate programmes, especially in family medicine and emergency medicine, initiated in Barbados.

He spearheaded the fight against the AIDS pandemic, as first Chairman of the National Advisory Committee on AIDS, and represented the region on the Global AIDS Programme. He has served as President of BAMP; repeatedly as Chairman of Medical Council; as first chairman of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine, and as a long serving scientific secretary of the Caribbean Health Research Council, which promotes health research. He wrote a 40 year history of regional research - and has published widely on health matters, including 35 papers in peer reviewed journals and a splendid book on medical ethics for Caribbean doctors.

Professor Walrond was elected Foundation President of the Caribbean College of Surgeons, is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon’s, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1990.

The Accolade of Knight of St. Andrew is conferred for his outstanding service to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and yeoman service to the Medical Faculty of the UWI.
